Turning the Olympia Expo Aisle into a Story-Driven Experience

OVERVIEW

The Hall Banners were designed as a large-scale environmental storytelling system for the Olympia Fitness Expo. Spanning the full length of the main aisle, the installation transformed a standard convention walkway into an immersive experience that celebrated past champions while reinforcing the scale and prestige of the event.

MY ROLE

I developed the core concept, led the design system, and oversaw execution from initial vision through final production and installation planning. This included creating 3D mockups to communicate the concept, defining the visual narrative, and ensuring all assets were production-ready at scale.

THE CHALLENGE

The Olympia Expo presented a massive, underutilized vertical space—approximately 50 feet from floor to ceiling—stretching the length of the main aisle, nearly three football fields long.

The challenge was multi-layered:

  • Create impact at extreme vertical scale
  • Ensure readability from a distance and while in motion
  • Prevent visual loss in a crowded expo environment
  • Account for real-world factors like airflow, material behavior, and added weight from stabilization
  • Integrate branding without overwhelming the experience

This had never been executed at this scale in Olympia history.

THE IDEA

The concept was inspired by walking through a grand hall—similar to a castle—where banners tell a story of legacy and achievement.

Each banner functioned as part of a larger narrative system, transforming the aisle into a visual timeline of champions. Rather than acting as isolated graphics, the pieces worked together to create a continuous emotional experience as attendees moved through the space.
Over 500,000 attendees moved through this hall during Olympia weekend.

EXECUTION

A series of twenty 30-foot banners were designed and strategically placed along the main aisle.

Each banner was structured with intent:

  • Top Section: Featured the division champion, scaled for long-distance visibility
  • Lower Section: Highlighted a secondary emotional moment—placed closer to eye level to connect with attendees as they passed beneath

All assets were developed with production precision:

  • Print-ready, large-format files
  • Material and scale considerations for clarity and durability
  • Coordination with vendors to ensure installation feasibility

Every decision balanced visual impact with real-world constraints.

STRATEGIC LAYER

The reverse side of each banner was used to feature exhibitor recognition.

  • This transformed the installation into a dual-purpose system:
  • Front: Celebrated athlete achievement
  • Back: Highlighted and appreciated participating vendors

This approach added sponsor value without disrupting the primary experience—turning a design feature into a business asset.

IMACT MOMENT

The moment attendees walked beneath the banners and looked up, the scale and emotion of the imagery created an immediate shift in perception—this was no longer just an expo, it felt like entering a legacy.

RESULT

The installation transformed the perception of the expo environment.

Instead of entering a standard trade show, attendees moved through a curated, story-driven space that reinforced the legacy of the Olympia brand.

  • Elevated the overall experience and sense of scale
  • Created a strong emotional entry point leading to the main stage
  • Maintained visual clarity within a crowded environment
  • Increased sponsor visibility in a meaningful, integrated way

This marked the first time an installation of this scale and narrative intent had been executed at the Olympia Expo.
